Review of Steins;Gate 0
So, I want to start it off by saying this is better than any sequel/prequel has any right to be in all honesty. The whole tone, characters, and animation, tried to be faithful to the original. This, in itself, is exceptionally hard. However, I'll say what really sold this for me, but it has to be supplemented with the original as if you're just watching it as a standalone it doesn't work. Art: Beautiful. The tone of desperation and despair are really set by the post apocalyptic tones, and it really brings out what the characters are experiencing. Whether through flashbacks or time travel, they reallyknow "shit is fucked" in the moment when they have to experience it.
Sound: Music is great and on point, even at the end they really know what the original is going for. I think they wanted to make an homage more than a continuation, which really works for the series as a whole.
Character: If you didn't cry or feel sad from a non-chunni Okabe (excuse me, Houin Kyoma!) then you are sorely misguided in sympathy. The whole show kept the same characters without resorting to making them memes or standards.
Overall, this is a great, emotional addition to Steins;Gate, and I hope those that enjoyed the first watch the second. If I had to list a failing, it was that the show tried to go for the "ball drop" the first series had about mid season, but they tried to do it like 3 or 4 times at the end. In reality, one would have sufficed for the seriousness of the show. Still, if you want more S;G and want some drama to your everyday harem show (with crippling depression) look no further than this.
