Review of Monster
Monster is the definitive mystery anime. The story is probably one of the best that has ever been seen in an anime, and without a doubt the best in the mystery / thriller genre, it is told to you in different plot lines that generate enough tension in the expert to keep you glued to the chair for all that each episode lasts, the slow rhythm that the series handles can be monotonous at times for those who are not used to the genre, but it is a real pleasure for those who like police storys. The art does not shine like in other anime, but takinginto account the genre, it is more than well achieved, it is based more on realism, and in that regard it plays more with the cameras and points of view of each character, which is what it is. truly amazing here, the colors and most of the background and character designs are heavily influenced by art deco and noir novels and movies.
The musicalization is also just right, giving the dark atmosphere necessary for the story, and transporting us to the Gothic Europe of the last century although the story is situated a little more in contemporary times. it does not shine either but it is fair and correct.
Finally, the characters, there is not much to say. The series makes exceptional use of characters, both main and secondary. Giving each one a coherent story and a more than credible point of convergence, the latter gives each one realism and it is easy for us to empathize with even perhaps the cruelest of villains.
In short, we are facing one of the most difficult works to match in plot quality, perhaps there will be animes that shine more for the visual spectacularity with epic soundtracks, but very few will manage to touch a subject as sensitive as the Fragility of the human mind, and the dark world we'd like to believe exists only in the minds of mystery novel writers or psychopathic killers.
