Review of Vinland Saga Season 2
The second season of Vinland Saga is quite unlike the first season. While the first season had action almost constantly with lots of tension, the second season is way more calm and focusses on the mental side of war while slowly progressing the story. The story in the second season is great. It starts of very slow and gives lots of information about new characters. However as the season progresses, all the elements in the story start coming together and the story really starts going somewhere again. Especially at the end of the season the story moves forward a lot and starts setting itself upfor the next season. Overall there is way less action and fighting in this season and it's more about Thorfinn processing the trauma he built up in all of his years fighting and eventually moving forward again. The story is still placed within a historical context making the progression seem logical. Some of the people meeting each other seem like a stretch since Denmark/England isn't all that small but it doesn't take away from the story too much.
The characters are detailed and okay overall. Both Thorfinn and Canute start either hallucinating or imagining things that aren't real which is kind of weird but this luckily doesn't play a huge role in the anime. The rest of the season consists mostly out of new characters who are all okay.
The animation in this season is good and relatively realistic. The music and voice acting are both good as well. Both the music and the animation suit the story/setting of the anime.
Overall this season is definitely worth watching or trying out. The story may be slower than in the first season but it is a continuation regardless and it's still great. If you were only watching the anime for action you might not be a great fan of this season though.
