Review of A Whisker Away
*Few small spoilers ahead, proceed with caution* This movie is about a middle-school girl that gets the ability to become a cat by wearing a mask given by a magical cat-thing. She use this ability to be with her crush, a boy that ignores her at school and thinks she's annoying, but treats her with love when she's in cat body. Of courses he doesn't know the cat he loves so much is in fact that annoying classmate. - Characters 5: Bipolar disorder. One moment they are happy, the next scene they are sad or even mad. The way characters change their behaviour so sporadic is aproblem. For example, at the beggining of the story Kento treats Miyo like an annoyance, then she defends him against other classmates talking sh*t about him and he treats her like if he had being his friend since forever. One day later, the love letter scene, he treats her like he has always hated her and the last day never happened, then he find out all of a sudden that he don't dislike her..... -_-
Yes, puberty can be used as a excuse, but even like that the behaviour change is so sporadic, forced and overreacted. Not much to say about character development, it's a movie.
The main male is a boy dealing with puberty problems + dumb familiar issues, something typical at that age.
The main heroine is charismatic, childish and honest, fits the character it's supposed to be, a middle school girl that acts like an elementary school girl. It's the weirdo of the class, but you know, the weirder the person the better as long as she/he is truly happy. I definitely liked her personality.
Support characters are ok, nothing outstanding, they are there just to accomplish their roles and don't receive much attention.
- Story 5 :
The idea is simple and goes through a magical path instead of a logical one, something that is not bad or incorrect, after all this movie is made for sentimental and/or young audience.
The story goes fast, after all it has limited time because it's a movie.
- Sound 6:
Does its job and fits most average of scenes in a decent way, so I can say it's a good point.
- Art and animation 5:
Animation and art for scenarios are ok most average of time and very good in the important scenes. Idk what to think about the design for characters, their animations are ok in the relevant scenes and mediocre for the most average of the rest. For me, characters design looks very mediocre, but there's no point on criticizing this cause it might be intentional and some kind of art expression. It's a style we usually see in animes made for kids (Kodomo demography).
- Enjoyment 5:
Like a rollercoaster, some parts I enjoyed it, some parts were boring af. It's slightly sentimental and relaxing, sometimes quite funny but the fact that I felt the interactions between characters too forced and mediocre + the "magical" essence is not what a 20 years old like me is looking for, didn't allow me to enjoy this movie completely.
- Overall 5.2 = 5:
Not bad, but it's not what I'm looking for. I would recommend it for kids and very young people in general.
