Review of Ya Boy Kongming!
Romance of the Music Industry. Ya Boy Kongming is one of the most unique music anime I’ve seen in a while. Well… that’s not quite true, I did watch Vivy: Fluortie Eye’s Song if you count a year as ‘not very long ago’ but, Vivy is a very different 10/10 to Kongming. The story of one of the most famous tacticians from the Three Kingdoms period of third-century China reincarnating into modern-day Tokyo and using his war tactics in the music industry by becoming a music manager to the ganki best girl, SMOKING HOT aspiring musical artist Eiko is genius. The show is very funny, surprisinglydeep, has some banging music which I can’t stop listening too (that ED song though) all whilst it delivers sharp satire of the music industry, the back stabbing artists who uses less known artists as stepping stones and the corporate meddling agencies do to take unique music talents and bend them into something more “mainstream”.
The team at studio P.A. Works did an amazing job on the animation. Not only does the anime look gorgeous, the actual music (guitar, drums, singing) is animated without short cuts and it looks amazing and it perfectly conveys the raw passion of the starving, inspiring artist which, as a musician myself hits so close to home. I seriously love watching animated instruments being played properly and the scene in the first episode of Eiko sat in her room playing the guitar and singing to Kongming genuinely gave me goosebumps.
The characters are also all amazing. Kongming is always polite and respectful to others to a fault and the way the story integrates his victorious, three kingdoms war strategy’s to manipulate the music scene is genuinely fascinating. Eiko is so sweet, pure and wholesome whilst, unlike some waifu’s still having a likeable and complex personality *cough* *Shikimori-san* *cough* (as well as being smoking hot) that I would happily give up all of my worldly possessions for her and will fight anyone who lays a finger on her legs… sorry, what were we talking about?
Honestly, if you haven’t watched this show then I implore you, please watch it. I swear you won’t regret it. This is one of though show where I will riot if it doesn’t get a second season so if there is one show you should be watching this season it Ya Boy Kongming… and Spy X Family… and Kaguya-sama… oh, and Dance Dance Danseur… and the second half of Komi Can’t Communicate, WHY IS THIS SEASON SO STACKED???
10/10 Practically Perfect.
