Review of BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.

I wish people would stop likening this to "Rise of the shield hero". Aside from the fact that the main character starts off wearing a shield THAT'S IT. Might as well liken any anime where the MC goes to school with every other anime that has a school age main character, regardless of genre. Or any anime where the protagonist swings a sword. It's the same as likening Berserk to Sword Art Online. They're just NOT the same shows. Now the review: Enjoyable fluff. That's it's niche really. It's not emotionally deep or a roller-coaster, it's an OP newbie havingfun in a fully immersive virtual realty (FIVR) game. (One that apparently also duplicates taste so must be neural connections, but that's not important). A new gamer on the recommendation of a friend who is a top tier gamer tries a new game. She's afraid of getting hurt so goes full defense. Premise is simple. The anime itself is really a bit of the wonder of new MMORPG player exploring a new world, and the fact the players think she's cute and so want to watch her have fun. She accidently plot-armours her way into being insanely OP and the show is basically her making friends and face-rolling her way to victory.

It's not about the drama or suspense, it's not deep, it's light, fluffy and fun just watching someone else enjoy themselves and make friends. There's few real surprises. However there doesn't need too be. For anime-over-all I'd give this a 7. However because it's not trying to be anything but what it is, for the niche it's filling I'd give it an 8.

Not for your OP Shonen watchers, but a great relaxing watch while destressing or as a pallet cleanser between more meaningful anime.

An enjoyable watch and I recommend for the more discerning audience.
