Review of Akira
It's Akira. What else is there to say? One of the most influential and technically perfect anime films of all time; a global phenomenon; a critical darling hailed as a masterpiece. My opinion on the movie is much in line with the popular consensus- it's beautiful, stunning, and worthy of its status. If you enjoy animation as an art at all, you absolutely should watch this movie. My only complaint is literally just that there isn't more- yes, I sat down and watched this long ass movie and went 'hm. that needed another hour or so'. I'm sure in basically every other review, you canread about the painstaking effort and attention put into the art; produced fully at 24fps and with no detail spared. It flows so smoothly... It's extremely visually pleasing. I can't think of any other movie that has such consistently excellent art. There are probably some people out there who don't like the art style, but they're wrong. It's good. And that's that.
One thing that really took me off-guard about the movie, having only seen small parts of it when I was a child (thanks Cartoon Network), is the excellent OST. It's completely different than what I had thought it would be like; it's extremely atmospheric and enhances the movie's stark tone.
I love the characters, but again, I wish they had more development... I think I'm just being greedy though, wanting more of the movie. They're all very well-developed, though since it was the 80s, I found the female characters' arcs a little lacking. Again, that's just a case of me wanting more of it. God I wish this movie had another hour tacked on. Let's make Akira watch parties an all-day affair, yeah?
Overall an extremely wellmade and historically/culturally important production, I would recommended this unconditionally to any serious anime fan.
