This is pretty much an adaptation of the first Pokémon movie in manga form but based on the CGI remake they did a while ago. Overall, it's not a bad adaptation. There are a few subtle differences, however. For example, in the anime version, Mewtwo is portrayed as more philosophical and emotionally conflicted. In contrast, the manga version presents him as more direct and aggressive Mewtwo’s armor, provided by Giovanni, has a different design. Also, the manga omits the ‘Pikachu’s Vacation’ mini-story — a feature included in the original VHS release I had growing up. From what I’ve found online, the CGI remake also omitted thePikachu’s Vacation opening — further confirming that this manga is based on that version.
As a fan of Pokémon, I still like the original movie - maybe it's just the nostalgia talking. The CGI remake isn’t bad — just a little different in places. Some parts and the manga version based on the CGI remake does a good job of showcasing it. The art is solid and presented well especially during the battle scenes. I also like the designs of the Kanto trio in this adaptation — they’re subtle and stay true to the classic era.
For veteran fans, it’s a tough recommendation — the changes are minimal. But if you liked the original and want a manga version for your collection, this is worth considering. Compared to the original manga release, which sometimes had awkward first-generation art, this version feels more polished. Newer fans might enjoy it even more, as it delivers the full CGI movie experience in manga form.
