I read the other review for this and felt compelled to make one myself as someone who's only read the manga up to its current point (Ch.9) but none of the source material. Unlike the other reviewer who seems to have some complex expectations-turned-resentment regarding the source material and how this stacks up to other, generational works, I casually picked this up at random, reading all of the chapters in a day. I found it to be pretty enjoyable so far. In terms of style, it has an interesting mix of politics/warfare with a little bit of romance; I also found the art style to be uniqueenough to be interesting. While I don't think the characters' motivations are necessarily deep and complex, I don't think the same of many people I know in real life - at the same time, to me, their motivations and interactions can be both interesting and seem plausible even if straightforward. Sometimes people who aren't overly "complex" can still be interesting, especially if the world they're in is, which I find this world to be.
If I were to make a criticism of this manga, the pacing, given how long the series has been going, is going at such a rate that 9 chapters (~2 years) in, it only feels like they have set up, more or less, the opening act of the story. (Chapters are 2-3x larger than many manga). I imagine this series might be frustrating for (bi-? tri-?) monthly readers.
All in all, don't let the other grumpy guy ruin it for you, it's pretty good so far if you're not going in with unreasonably Legend of the Galactic Hero-level expectations. Personally I don't think it will be easy to judge the story beyond "This is an interesting setup so far" for another couple of years at the pace the story is going, but I'm interested enough that I'm looking forward to catching up on future chapters periodically.
