Review of Devilman: Crybaby

The Devilman manga is great.. read that instead I respect what they tried to do here, but by taking itself more seriously, it makes the pulpy story fall apart. This adaptation really goes for broke trying bring the emotion, yet the original's simplicity managed to have much more of an impact on me. Its allegory, which works in the source material, suddenly feels gratuitous and offensive in a story set a grounded 2018, and made worse with misguided attempts at representation. I really like some of the animation, especially the whole last chunk of episode 1 with the rave. And there's some great music.
