Review of Devilman: Crybaby
If only this show did its action a little bit better, I can see it being a 10. It's clear this show knows how to use color to great effect, and doesn't always play it safe, but unfortunately, the color and art style decisions fall apart when I feel like the show needs it most. Because of this, the show lacks the impact to create truly heart-attack inducing action scenes. To be specific, the majority of the high-stakes action is done in pitch black darkness. A little more work given to the quality of these fight scenes could have made this show a 10 inmy eyes.
These choices felt like a big waste of what felt like at times, splendid animation and made the choreography feel confusing. Unfortunately, I don't have any desire to go back and watch any of the fight scenes because of this. I hesitate to give this show more than a 9 in any aspects because nothing about it struck me as media defining, but it is more than solid in everything that it does. If only this show could have made my heart race like Ping Pong, Mob Psycho or FLCL, I think it would have been a 10/10.
