Review of The Fruit of Grisaia
The Fruit of Grisaia started and ended with me bemused every step of the way. The reasons, however, changed. The show started out with little insight on what was going on. The bits of info I could pick out was that the school was special, had 6 attendees (5 girls 1 guy), and that one of the girls wants to murder the guy. I felt like I was thrown in without any guidance as to where the plot was going, but luckily the first few episodes explained the superficial information about the characters pretty well. As I was deeper into the show, Irealized the purpose of the protagonist's involvement with the school, and I also realized the guy is an assassin (not really a spoiler because I'm pretty sure I'm just an idiot and should have known this from the start). I realized that there is something fundamentally wrong with each girl in the school, and because of that, the protagonist is there to protect and help them.
From this moment on, I really started to enjoy the show and wanted to know how the protagonist was going to help the next girl come to terms with her past. Each girl is very unique which made me very invested in the story. After about 8 or 9 episodes, I decided to rate this show an 8 for the time being, because I was truly enjoying it until........the next....4....episodes......
This is why my rating of an 8 went straight to a 6. The show had a dark atmosphere about it, and each girl's story was pretty messed up. It did get pretty dark from 1 through 8, but nothing too much for me. Episodes 9 through 10, though, were just insane in my opinion. the last two girls' stories were just absolutely unnecessarily gory, depressing, and just down right creepy. I understand writers like to express their artistic right, but this was entirely too far. It completely took me by surprise and threw me straight out of the plot. I had to fast forward through a couple of scenes, and at some points I just wanted to stop watching.
I'm not going to spoil anything and the ending, but if you don't like needless rape scenes, girls peeing themselves, and dead bodies, don't spend your 300 minutes on this show. I would have scored it a 5, but I just wanted to make myself believe that I didn't just waste 300 minutes of my life.
