Review of The Ancient Magus' Bride
The Ancient Magus' Bride had one of strongest starts I have seen, a centuries old, huge Humanoid monster with bonehead barging in an secret auction to buy a girl for 5 million pounds claiming to make her his pride. Like holy shit just Imagine all the possibilities and stories this can build it, but keep Imagining it cause show it self does nothing with it. 1. This comes from same studio who gave us Attack on Titan, Kabaneri Fortress,The Empire of Corpses and Vinland Saga and Vinland saga. All mentioned above, except Vinland Saga which should be erased, are visuallystunning shows/movies. This show isn't any different, particles, lights and shadows then spells are cast are amazing ,layer this intricately drawn characters and scenery and viewing truly becomes experience on its own.
2.While second opening sounds like is performed by grade schooler on his first karaoke night, rest of show's musical score with its magical melodies and tunes does good job at enhancing scenes they accompany. While only ost I would listen on its would be first opening, after finishing the show and listening full ost, it is something worth listening to if one likes soft, soothing soundtracks to calm down to.
3.Despite being great from technical stand point, then it comes to overall story and characters it's anything between mediocre to lack luster. While not being amazingly well written, Chise is cohesive and interesting character. Watching her battle depression and feeling worthlessness as she travels the magical world is entertaining also saddening (especially if you are a sucker for emotional shows or things such as depression are alot more personal to you). However while thats all and good, Elias, 400 year old mage, who is suppose to be most interesting part of the show and one to drive the plot end up being rather bland , uninteresting character who is more of passive observer of the plot than Chise. This really starts to hurt the show in second half as magical world introduction honey moon has passed , show starting to slow down banking on amassed momentum to carry it to the end. This becomes especially clear in final arc as one character points out to Elias that up until that point he had no goal with which Elias agrees. So what was he doing for last 20 episodes aside from poorly baby sitting Chise. See this is even stupider if we remember that mid way through the show we learn what his plans for Chise are, but he never ends up acting on them, as if he has forgotten why he paid 5 million pounds for a school girl. One could make several paraghraps long essay with all the issues and wrongs with Elias and his character.
Overall any potential Elias had as ancient mage is never released and hence heartbreakingly wasted.
I could also mention pathetically weak Villain whose existence is crossbreed in only to puff out a lifeless attempt at creating tention.
I have not even touched on to world building and side characters but at this point I would be wasting time, writer who can't even create mediocere protagonist and villain surely doesn't have talent to create interesting side characters or modern world infused with magical entities.
4. Would I recommend The Ancient Magus' Bride? Well I am above mentioned sucker for feeling and so it did manage to get tear or two out of me so i can't completely disregard it but looking back it is not that significant of the show so unless you have no other show to watch or want to waste time ,
You could watch it but its not a show I would out right recommend to someone.
6/10, ehh it was fine
