Review of Black Butler
First of all, I have zero idea what was going on with the plot of this anime. Don't get me wrong, the characters were great, but I feel like you'd have to read the manga to really get your money's worth on the storyline. Essentially, there were many differing bits of story throughout the entire season that didn't really fit together. I understand the overall point and meaning of the story, but it just wasn't executed all that well. That being said, the characters in this anime are some of the best I've seen in this genre. However, their backgrounds weren't really touched on as muchas I would've liked them to be, and in fact, the parts of them we did see didn't make much sense in the grand scheme of the season.
Probably the one thing that was simultaneously the most confusing and most interesting about this anime was Ciel and Sebastian's relationship. It was very intriguing trying to figure out the depths of it--or rather, if there was any depth at all.
I'm hoping that the second season brings more clarity as to the point of Ciel's journey with Sebastian, beyond the obvious (Sebastian wanting to... you know, eat him). We'll see, I suppose.
