Review of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

Now that the dust has settled. This is obviously Hideaki Anno doing whatever he couldn't do with Nadia in the early 90s plus both literally within the setting by taking control away from Shinji and symbolically by taking control away from the fans. With the conclusion in the final movie being proof of that. There comes a time in every artist's vision where one has to decide on whether they'll be devoured by their legacy or move on to other things, and this movie honestly was Anno's own turning point. Retreading the steps from "The end of Evangelion" would've been pointless, both it along with theoriginal series stand as their own masterpieces and worthwhile studies for growing artists on how to take advantage of resource limitations, i always saw the Rebuild series of movies as an opportunity to do everything that wasn't possible to be done back then, and honestly straying away from the original material ended up being a blessing in my opinion since the way i see it 3.0+1.0 delivered in substance and it will be remembered and studied similarly to Anno's older work. Sure it lacks the mythic narrative behind Neon Genesis, but if one thing the Evangelion franchise has proven over the years is, its ability to endure in relevancy. It's Netflix rerelease should've proven its timelessness by now.

Rating the most controversial piece of Evangelion media 10/10 may seem provocative to some but in my opinion, given the track record remakes/reboots have, this is quite honestly the greatest example of a creator going back and redoing their Magnum Opus, i was waiting patiently over the many years as each movie came out, and i didn't lose faith after the drought that came following this movie's release, i wish to see Studio Khara finally create a brand new IP, and Anno himself has admitted that with the release of the final movie he'd be done with the franchise so i guess we'll see.
