Quick take: The series is both episodic and has longer running themes. The series strong point is well designed characters and a very good storyline. The storyline follows the adventures of Rock as the newest member of Black Lagoon. Each story can range from one episode to a few in length and while each arc is good within it’s own right, the arc that we’re really following is the changes and relationships experienced by Rock and the members’ of Black Lagoon. That’s where the series really shines, in my opinion. Putting aside the brilliant side characters like the Roberta, the main characters Rock, Revy, Dutch andBenny are all incredibly well thought out and executed. Revy’s longing for a simple life once held by Rock stands in contrast to her reality. Similarly, Rock’s desire to have a life filled with adventure stands in contrast to his morality. This makes for interesting situations and fun interactions between the characters. We see the team of Black Lagoon grow stronger throughout the series.

Art and sound are very well done, the ending theme to Black Lagoon is one of my favorites as it is a haunting melody that, to me, encapsulates the longing desires of Rock and Revy. Acting (Japanese) is well done throughout the first series.

While you’re not going to find incredible storylines, you’ll find growth within in the main characters relationships and personality that lead to an incredibly fun to watch show. I highly recommend it to everyone.
