Review of Akira
*No Spoilers. A timeless classic for anime fans. That was what I was waiting for. I wasn't into anime so I didn't watch it, but one day, I stumbled upon the people over on Corridor Crew who reacted to the opening of the movie with our main character, Kaneda, and a cyberpunk, Neo-Tokyo as the backdrop. I was speechless. Story(8): To be honest, I expected this film to be about a biker gang who manage to survive a daily life of chaos and brutality from the opening scenes. Turns out, I was right...plus an entire movie. I was really confused at first but the storymanaged to get pieced together in my head so I was finally able to appreciate this movie. Art(10): As unique art styles go, it scores rather high in my book because it can display the quality and detail that movies can offer, all while being able to capture that anime feel with a healthy dose of realism. Akira has art that stands the test of time, 40 years after release. I love the art and imagery this movie produces. Sound(8): I really love Kaneda's theme with the drums and the overall feel of having lived in this technologically advanced metropolis. The rest of the soundtrack is very atmospheric. It's memorable and I like it. Character(8): I really like the feelng behind the acting of the characters. I watched this dubbed and really liked Johnny Yong Bosch's performance for Kaneda and Seth Joshua's performance for Tetsuo. I like the chemistry between these voices. I really like the character development for the both of them as well. Enjoyment/Overall(7/9): To be honest, it was a slog to get through, but I think that was due to my tastes at the time. I thought the animation was masterly crafted and the date doesn't truly show in this film. I really enjoyed this movie and I wish to watch more staples of anime because of this.
