If you've been following the series, you don't really need to watch this, think the second half of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, it was the first half of End of Evangelion, this is basically the same, its the first half of the series, but they've cut bits out and just kept the main aspects of the story and cut out some of the action scenes and the stuff that wasn't really important. If you've been told to try the series and don't mind missing some small details, then you could just watch this then start from episode 7, or if you enjoy the show and wanta quick recap, otherwise there's nothing really of value.

If you've just come here, wondering if its for you then I'd recommend watching episode 1, it starts off showing you historic events then leads in to the present day, it has a fair few fighting scenes (at least 1 every episode so far if my memory serves well), some scenes with some light humour and there's a load of religious influences, such as having Greek gods, references to the bible and even Joan of Arc.

I'd personally recommend it if you're a fan of RPGs, as to me it has a kind of Final Fantasy crossed with Breath of Fire (mostly 3) feel, leaning more towards Breath of Fire.
