Review of Tsukigakirei
Love is not as simple as you think, at least in the real world. Sometimes when watching anime, at least for me, you get tired of all the cliches in romance anime. You know, nosebleeds or crude jokes or some kind of love triangle that may not improve the story. For me, I was waiting to watch a romance anime that didn't go to that extreme and was a "slice of life" type romance anime. Tsuki ga Kirei is exactly that, a 12 episode romance anime that is more realistic than most. The awkwardness and silence make for a very realistic anime. Story- I can't spoilit, huh? I wouldn't want to either, and you'll get a grasp of the story in the first episode!! A brief review of the 12 episodes would go like this. Two 3rd years in middle school are now in the same class. They both spot each other. Their shyness gets in the way of them being able to hold a conversation. One day, after a event the boy and the girl notice each other through different moments. Over the course of the anime, their shyness at talking to each other reduces bit by bit. Of course Feel. uses LINE to allow the characters to communicate between each other. By the end of the story, both characters are sure about their future between each other. Does the challenges of preparing to go to High School get in between them or does it strengthen their relationship, You gotta watch to see!! The story is smooth and nothing feels pushed, nothing too overdramatic. 10/10
Art- Come on, it's 2017 and anime is getting better and better each year. Kirei takes animation to another level IMO. Not only are the movements of the characters good but the detail in each shot, it is as if you are in Kawagoe, you can even check out the similarities in shots between the real city and the representation in the anime. I would even go to the extreme to say that almost every shot in the anime is not boring. 10/10
Sound- Well, it's hard to say how great the music is as it is not used that often. Kirei uses music rarely compared to other romance anime. You may be thinking that, "oh the scenes aren't going to be full of substance". You would be right in other anime series but in Kirei it is the opposite, the lack of music adds to the intensity in scenes and allows you focus and put your feelings into the scene. Your feeling are not dictated by the music but by the actions in the scene. With that out of the way, the opening theme and the ending theme are magnificent!! I listen to both on a anime playlist!! 10/10
Characters- There are two main characters and two "in the way" characters. The two main are Kotaro Azumi and Akane Mizuno. The anime does a great job at giving each hobbies and things to do in their lives such as preparing for sports, Mizuno, and preparing for a festival, Azumi. The characters talk just enough and sometimes not enough, which adds to the scenes. They aren't over the top or loud, they are quite shy. The shyness allows you as the watcher to connect to their feelings as if they were your own. The two "in the way" characters are also very well designed in their attitudes. They don't feel like the characters that always get in the way, they add to the story and give the building relationship between Azumi and Mizuno a challenge. Overall each character is beautifully designed and each have very good, well thought out personalities. 10/10
Enjoyment- I wouldn't be writing this review if I didn't absolutely love this anime!! For 12 episodes, it felt like I spent my time wisely watching this anime. I love the opening theme, I love the shyness and awkwardness between the two characters and I love how realistic the relationship is for 3rd year students in middle school. I love the scenes not only between the main characters but the detail in those and other scenes. You could spend dozens of minutes on one episode looking at all the detail, a masterpiece made by Feel. 10/10
Overall- Every aspect of this anime is great. Of course, you, the viewer, have to want to what a realistic school romance anime. If you are looking for that, then the 12 episodes of Tsuki ga Kirei will grant you that wish. Not to mention that at the end of many episodes there are funny shorts about characters around the two main ones. You feel satisfied after watching both the episode and a minute or two of shorts. 10/10
Thank you for reading this, I really appreciate it as it took me a while to think of how to write my true feelings about the show down. I hope you enjoy this anime if you do watch it and if you don't watch it, I hope you find other anime that fills your heart with joy!! Have a great day!!
