While I found this anime to be a refreshing breath of fresh air when it came to a unique art style that properly utilized CGI, character development just fell flat for me. The MC of Houseki no Kuni goes through this "coming of age" process that I've seen time and time again and I just felt like the execution was poor. I felt like it was forced, haphazard and extremely disorienting. Don't get me wrong, I understand overall why things happen the way they do, but I felt like even with the set progression it could have been executed in a much more thought outway. The saving grace is that I enjoyed the character development for all the other gems.

As far as enjoyment goes it wasn't bad. I enjoyed the story for what it was, because it was much more original than anything else I've watched recently. I do however believe that biggest issue I had with the story and therefore effected my overall enjoyment was the massive number of loose ends. This show had a tendency to open up pandora's box in one place, never close it. Then open it up somewhere, never close it and so on and so forth. I felt like there were a million plot arcs that were started, but never actually resolved. While I am all for cliff hangers (and reading the manga), I felt like once again execution was lacking.

Overall, it was a good experience. I laughed. I cried. I got really pissed off. I take into full account that I have personal bias about execution, so with that in mind I give this show tons of points for great story, art, and sound. It was definitely a fantastic ride.
