Review of Fena: Pirate Princess

*No Spoilers* I just finished this anime the other day and though it was pretty entertaining but it falls short in a lot of ways. Firstly the art and sound are near perfect, the character designs are good and the romance was pretty strong. However it's pretty misleading, from the title and the trailers I expected a Akatsuki no Yona vibe and at first it had that but the character development was very weak especially in Fena herself. If you go into this thinking a that it starts off with a weak princess who through her struggles becomes stronger and badass you'll be very disappointedbecause although Fena is likeable she's a lackluster protagonist who is basically just a damsel in distress most of the time which sucks because she could have been really good if the creators had followed the route of Yona. Obviously copying Yona exactly would be bad but Fena deserved a bit more development which I understand is difficult considering the anime is only 12 episodes whereas Yona is 25.

This anime's weak points really comes from the fact it's only 12 episodes had it been longer the story may have been less rushed and the characters, main and side could have been explored more. There's a lot of missed story telling especially with some of the side characters who just disappear and reappear when some drama needs to happen so it comes across as jumbled and confusing at times. It also really has nothing to do with pirates, there are pirate characters and most of the show takes place on the ocean but like Fena is only a princess not a pirate which could have been way more fun.

My main qualm with the show is the ending I won't go into detail but it's very weak and when I watched episode 12 I just felt like 'wow this is really what it's been leading up to?'

Overall it's a decent anime with amazing art and sound so if you enjoy adventure anime with good art I'd still give it a shot just don't expect the best.
