Lupin III: Goodbye Lady Liberty · review
I just don't understand how you anyone could not like this. Ozamu Dezaki, I knew you invented the harmony cel, but I still wasn't familiar with your game. That was nuts. So fun, so much crazy shit. All the gadgets reminded me Inspector Gadget was literally Lupin at first, they just couldn't get the licensing rights, so they had to rip him off. By the last act, it's almost hard to believe this was the same movie that started with them stealing the entire Statue of Liberty, so crazy. The direction is awesome, just tons and tons of cool scenes that surprise you, withshots from angles you very rarely see in anime. This movie looks amazing, especially for a TV movie. The nice scan made it even more beautiful, felt like a giant leap up from the DVD rip of Fuma Conspiracy we just saw. The opening scene just completely blew us away with how good all the CDS, computers, and floppy discs looked, and the digitized Lupin was one of the coolest intros to a character in an anime movie ever. Mamo-level aura was back, they come in swinging, and it gasses up Lupin so hard you can't help get hyped. And shit looks nuts, maybe even better than Mamo, honestly. But Mamo's direction was what carried that, this direction is just pretty great. Cole wasn't that crazy about its plot, but I thought its plot was pretty crazy. I guess it doesn't compare to the high-concept of Mamo's plan, but this one is all over the place and gets me with how much they fit into this runtime. Awesome work.
That one bit where it just turns into End of Evangelion is really funny.
