I'm not much of a fan of 80s dystopian sci-fi genres so this film was kinda on the "meh" side. The characters are fine, the art style and animation looked great; however, I just didn't find the story that interesting. Nausicaa's pacifism, her empathy towards the Ohms, and her environmental understanding of the toxic jungle never really clicked with me. It just made her look like your typical Mary Sue with zero character flaws. Some people may argue, "Oh, but she killed those Tolmekian soldiers out of hatred." Bro, they were invading her valley, agitating the Ohms, and taking them hostage. Tf did you expecther to do? Also Kushana is probably the worst villain you could ever imagine. I didn't find Kushana threatening. I just found her annoying, ungrateful, and stubborn. Kushana did not serve any purpose in this movie. She was just there to inconvenience everyone. Lastly, what even is Asbel's role here? He's the perfect example of a simp who isn't the MCs love interest but will turn coat for her anyway because she's a nice person. Look, I'm not saying the film is bad. It's heavily acclaimed among the community so there must be a reason why people like it. I'm just one of the rarer Ghibli fans who never got invested in the lore, the ethics, or the ecological messages it was pushing. Watching this movie made me realize just how much I prefer cozy and lighthearted Ghibli films over the classic ones with mature themes (Grave of the Fireflies is an exception tho). Overall, Nausicaa Valley of the wind was a 2-hour struggle for me. I really tried to find the deeper meaning behind the plot, but in the end I got lost. I understand the whole idea is about pacifism and rejection of violence; however, those themes just turned Nausicaa into a Mary Sue. Not to mention a very deux ex machina ending. In the end, the only thing that kept me going was the pretty animation and the possibility of the plot getting more interesting as it goes on.
