For Our Farewell Is Near · review
Sayonara ga Chikai no de is a short, quiet one-shot that says more in a few pages than most series manage in volumes, or at least it tries to. It’s written and drawn by Makoto Yukimura, a mangaka best known for Vinland Saga and Planetes and someone whose works have always stood out for their deeply human pacifist core. That theme is alive here too. The story follows a sick man during wartime, and for most of its brief length, not a lot "happens" in the typical plot sense. But there’s something underneath it all that lingers. A statement about the futility of violence, the fragilityof life, and maybe even about how something as small as kindness, or simply not choosing violence, can mean something even in the middle of war.
That said, I’ll be honest. I didn’t fully get everything the story was trying to say. It felt poetic, abstract even and I’m sure there are layers I missed. But even without complete clarity, the tone and message came through enough to leave a mark. And in classic Yukimura fashion the art is absolutely beautiful.
If you’re already a fan of Yukimura, or you’re curious about the emotional depth he brings to storytelling, this one-shot is worth ten minutes of your time. It might not blow you away, but it has a sincerity to it that’s hard not to respect.
