March Comes in Like a Lion · review
Despite starting off with an excruciatingly slow pace, 3-gatsu no Lion, after a certain point opens up and turns into a beautiful story about a pro Shogi player that's only a school student. The characters are all likable, from the three girls of the Kawamoto family that's supporting each other against the cruelty of life, to the main character Rei Kiriyama that has always wanted a place that he belongs to. Even the many pro Shogi players that we come into the story through Kiriyama's career all have very detailed and engaging stories about their own circumstances. Overall, I think the characters of this manga is whatI would call its strong point. Despite technically being a "Shogi manga", it's much more about "family" and "a place to belong" that everyone yearns for. It's not overly dramatic, and not overly childish either, avoiding many cliches and creating a mature life story. I'd recommend it to everyone, and think that the score of 7, "Good" is fitting for this manga.
