The Archmage Returns After 4000 Years · review

This series returned after an almost 2 year hiatus and graced us with a final run of 11 chapters to round out the story. So, after such a long delay, how do I feel about it? I still think this was a good time. A revenge story built on 4000 years of torture that led to the overthrow of tyrannical demigods with crazy powers? Yeah, it was worth seeing it through. These last few chapters were a pretty strong wrap-up that concludes the main elements the story. I wish I'd gotten to experience this ending when it was still fresh for me so that I couldenjoy it more, but it wasn't hard to slide back into a similar mentality watching Lucas Trowman taking on Lord, even if the feelings were muted. The very end does seem a little like Poochie from The Simpsons going "I have to go now, my planet needs me," but it does feel at least somewhat earned, so there's that.

I think this series survived and thrived on the strength of its fights chiefly (yes, it had a lot of very pretty panels that did a great job evoking the motion of these) and on its character interactions. It's interesting to see how certain elements from 4000 years ago bleed into the present, though it would have been nice to get more of that and more insight into those intervening years. The power jumps were a little absurd at times, but considering the sheer scale of the foes in this series, it had to set those bars high. Still, it does mean that the story is mostly about reaching a certain level and then showing off how powerful they are, which does lead to some cool magic tricks, but feels less effective as the series goes on. In general, the narrative is just a vehicle to facilitate that, and it does well enough in that regard, but not a lot else. I think the characters themselves are pretty decent and many of them get their moments to shine, even if they can sometimes feel left behind afterward.

Overall, not bad. It does what it sets out to do with more flash than substance, but that's fine. I enjoyed what we got, I'd just have a hard time recommending this one when other series do the same but with more substance.
