The Legendary Fossil · review

I really wanted to like this. The art is nice. It's easily the best part of this story. It's consistent and steady, with decent flow... as long as we're not talking about the fighting scenes. This story clearly has Frieren the manga (not the anime) as one of its inspiration. I can sense it from the basic 'what happens after defeating the Demon King' premise and the storytelling. Just like Frieren the manga, this is a story that attempts to hide complexity behind its even-toned storytelling. Just like Frieren the manga, this is a story that intentionally anchors the mood so that the tone ofthe narrative stays relatively grounded whether it's during a dangerous fight or during a heartfelt moment.

And just like Frieren the manga, this is a slow story that leaves a lot of space that, ideally, would make the readers to reflect on everything that has happened.

There's a framework of a good story. It's also clear that the writer has genuine skills. The tone is consistent. Side characters are pretty varied and none of them are cartoonishly evil or stupid. I think the attempt to make the MC's background different than most Otome Isekai story is nice and appreciated. I also appreciate the romance; it's calm and steady and at times, genuinely sweet.

But unlike Frieren, The Legendary Fossil is all skin deep.

Frieren's narrative may feel breezy and wistful, but it is genuinely thoughtful, with characters that are well-defined and vivid even with the quiet tone of the storytelling. Each characters feels distinct, with clearly defined motivation, personality, and quirks, so that when the story DO stop to sprinkle little hints and details, they only serve to enrich the narrative and the world.

This story... is not. It's weightless and not in a good way.

Parts of this is because the other part in the story's equation is the specific Isekai subgenre of "brilliant slacker who wants peace and calm keeps being thrown deeper and deeper into intrigue and drama". There's a lot of detachment in the story; for the majority of the narrative, the MC mostly reacts to the development around her.

That would work, if the narrative is a peaceful slow life story. But this is not that story. A lot of "I don't like this but I guess there's no other way for me but to follow along" results in a fantasy narrative that feels very disengaged with its own story.

But part of it is also... things are just FLAT.

While I applaud the writer's control of the tone, the end result is painful. The restraint in the writing results in every single plot landing softly, flatly, despite being paced with the same kind of pacing you'd expect in more serious fantasy stories.

The Legendary Fossil adds a lot of story elements but constantly refuses to dive deep enough into any of them. At first it tries to present the usual school life OI premise. And then it shifts into an attempt of some fantasy story, with court politics and cursed weapons and some sort of conspiracy. Things keep happening. The protagonist keeps reacting. And yet, the feelings remain mostly flat.

The action is just there, the court politics is just there, the school politics is just there, the fantasy element is just there, the mystery is just there, the romance is just there.

Worse, even the slacking, which is the MC's initial raison d'etre, is almost never shown.

It's like the story isn't even interested at ANYTHING. I'd applaud it if the narrative is trying to make a point about depression and C-PTSD, but no. There's no deeper meaning behind all these.

Worst of all, this flatness also extends to the characters and their bonds. Again I can't help but compare this with Frieren because despite using the same framework, The Legendary Fossil is nothing like it; none of the original 'Hero Party' feels like good friends, much less comrades forged in fire and battle.

And while the cast is introduced as these complex set of issue and trauma, the story doesn't do much about it. Story arcs are concluded without any significant change to the characters' personality and mindset. Secret villain has as much impact as neighborhood bully, while supposed best friends and fire-forged comrades feel as close to the MC as a random NPC introduced for the arc.

I'd go as far as say that there's an overwhelming "it is what it is /shrugs" to the overall narrative. While initially the story reads very easy, by the end I'm gnashing my teeth as I scrolled down and down.

I've read through the end and there are plenty of moments where I'm like, "Wait is that it?? No development, no conclusion?? JUST THIS??? AND THE STORY KEEPS GOING LIKE EVERYTHING IS RESOLVED??"

But my praises still apply. For all its flaws, the story is very easy to read.

If you want a plain and pleasant fantasy story and you don't mind a whole lot of shallowness, I think you'll enjoy The Legendary Fossil.

But for me...I wanted more. And I'm still disappointed I couldn't get more.
