Nice Prison · review
A shōnen set in a colossal prison inhabited by bizarre inmates, where one model prisoner tries to stop a riot from the inside while exploring the facility’s strangest, most forgotten corners. Sounds cool. Unfortunately, the premise is mostly squandered, because this is just an over-the-top gag manga with little interest in developing its world beyond what each joke needs. A few of the gags are funny, but most are... er, very Japanese. Like a lot of gag series, it leans on the boke/tsukkomi dynamic, except here it's pushed to the limit: literally every other line is the girl security guard describing the gag we've just seen. Thesecurity guard, in fact, is so subsumed by her tsukkomi role that she is a non-entity otherwise. Plenty of shōnen series thrive on the appeal of a cute female lead, but even if the main girl weren’t drawn too clumsily to look cute, she’d still be unappealing due to being a mannequin spewing out straight-man lines.
