Let me preface this by saying I love campy crap. I grew up watching Godzilla, Ultraman, Gamera. This is my stuff. I love it. Let me also preface with, this is my favorite anime of all time, there will be some bias. I'll try to remove it, but I know that's impossible to remove all of it. So let's get started. SLIGHT SPOILERS: Black Rock Shooter is about an ordinary middle school girl, Mato Kuroi, as she starts at a new school and makes friends with a girl named Yomi. Their friendship develops, along with hardships, and girls in anotherplane fight for them. That's the basic gist. I won't explain further to avoid spoilers.

Story 6/10:
This isn't the most well thought out story. In fact if you take out the BRS (Black Rock Shooter) segments, it's basically a run of the mill, average, does nothing special, slice of life. That's okay. The story is a coming of age story about school, friendship, and even love, and dealing with those feelings. But they only act as a vehicle to get to the cool fight scenes.

Art 10/10:
The art is great. BRS is an earlier use of CGI and it looks good. IMHO, it's the first good attempt at incorporating CGI into an anime. I love Huke's art and while he doesn't work on the anime specifically, you see his influences everywhere. The environments hit that "edgy/campy" look of the art it's based on. It just looks good to look at... if that makes sense.

Sound 10/10:
It all just sounds good. Nothing sounds off to me, the music is great. I love the OP, but I mean, it's Hatsune Miku so like, lmao. The ending is also good, it's supercell, and it's a great song. The music in the series itself just sounds good, and I love how it's composed. The voice acting doesn't sound bad, but that's just Japanese voice acting, we don't have an English dub yet, but DiabloTek did pick up the rights and are dubbing it. So for what we have, yeah, this sounds great, sound effects are good, music is good, and voice acting is good.

Character 7/10:
They're good, passable. Again, the story (and main characters) are just a vessel for the fights. Black Rock Shooter acts as you expect, which is good. The best character is honestly Yuu/Strength, but I won't get into that to avoid spoilers.

Enjoyment 10/10:
Like I said, I love this type of stuff, and I just always loved BRS. I discovered the series back in like... 2011, and loved it ever since. It's campy, it's edgy, but it's just so fun to watch.

Overall, 9/10. There you have it, my review of BRS.
