Review of Devilman: Crybaby
well, i binged it on netflix, and it was an overall nice experience. i would absolutely recommend it if you're more of a plot type of person, because really, that's all this anime has to offer, and it does it in a graceful manner. Art: 7/10 This one's a little tricky. while it IS very different from the standard animation you've probably watched, it does have it's charm, but it's not for everyone. after an episode or two you get used to the pacing and how characters move around and how the physics work, and it does feel that effort was put in to make it; however, the difference is great enough that some parts feel like some sort of quircky flash animation. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt since it's the first time i've seen something like it in anime.
Character: 3/10
Very lackluster. close to no development whatsoever, and even for a 10 episode anime, there was never an attempt of it in the whole show. while the story doesn't require some extremely deep stuff, you really don't feel any attachment to any character at all. it almost seems like this was on purpose, as to give you a complete outsiders perspective, so the viewer is fully focused on the plot, but it's clearly overdone (you can be very focused on the plot and at least have some interest on a character). for me, there are two reasons this category doesn't get a 0: the first being the story benefits from not showing too much of the characters, and the other is that a select few characters do grasp your attention at very few moments; it's almost insignificant, but it's there.
Story: 10/10
Fenomenal. i dont even know how it's possible, given how the characters are so poorly developed, i guess it just goes to show how great the story is. it just makes up for everything the anime lacks, very well done. when you're watching this anime, you end up noticing all the character and animation flaws, and how in any other anime stuff like that would absolutely tear it apart, but somehow (at least for me) it just becomes irrelevant, or very minor, given how interesting the plot is.
Overall: 8/10
the story and mature aspect complement each other, making this a great show to watch. while i think it could have been a little better with just some tiny attempts at character development, it is a great watch nonetheless. it's a well crafted story to sit down and watch and a very pleasent experience overall, a nice and intriguing start and a solid ending.
