Review of Black Clover
This is my first review, but I will try my best. Black Clover is an anime that I had heard a lot about. Back in 2017 I remember hearing everyone shitting on it, calling it garbage and a simple Naruto rip-off. Then in 2021 when it ended, so many people were crying, wanting it to continue. No matter what people think about the anime itself, I believe no one it able to disagree that in its run, was able to gather a strong fan base and get rid of most hate(maybe because most haters dropped it in the first 20 episodes or so). Black Clover fromit's story to it's production is a 2000s series through and through. In an era where shounen manga and anime try to be different, more mature and edgy, black clover comes in with your classic story that you can find in other old school anime such as Bleach, Hitman Reborn and Naruto. Some people may call that outdated, but I personally believe that Black Clover is needed, to remind us of what shounen is. I believe that every few years we should be getting a Naruto, a One Piece, a Black Clover, to keep the flame of classical shounen alive.
Story-8/10
The beginning of Black Clover is extremely weak. From slow passing, to generic concept, to one-note characters there is nothing to keep your interest. It's far from awful, the way to describe the first 30 or so episode of the show would be, as people nowadays like to say MID, but after that the story starts to increase in quality with every arc. From character development, to smart plot-twists, amazing fights and emotional moments(both sentimental and sad), Black Clover manages to deliver it all. It uses the clichés of classical shounen and executes them well. Was I looking at my phone from time to time in the first few dozen episodes? Yes I was. Was I on the edgy of my seat in the last 70 or so(canon) episodes? Most definitely!
Sound-8/10
Great soundtrack, fits every scene perfectly and makes the scenes from the manga even better.
Art and Animation-7/10
It's by the same studio as Naruto, but in my opinion Naruto had better production than Black Clover. Just as Naruto, some important fights look absolutely fantastic, but outside of them the art and animation is either average or bad. Because of it's inconsistency I believe my score is fair enough.
Character-7/10
As the show progresses you learn to love most of the characters. They are not brilliant by any stretch of the imagination but are really lovable, work well together and some are pretty well-developed.
Filler-As most long shounen anime, filler is a thing in Black Clover. It's good and doesn't distract you from the story most of the time, but i recommend if you are gonna watch it do so as you watch the cannon, because I made the mistake to watch a good portion of "anime canon" episodes after i finished the canon and it was a pain in the as for the most part. If you don't plan on watching filler watch episode 151, an amazing action episode that every fan should see.
Enjoyment-8/10
Overall-8/10
I had a very good time watching Black Clover as a whole, good enough to pick up the manga so I can continue the story. Very fun shounen that I am sure in 15 years will be considered a classic the same way series like Reborn! and Shaman King are.
