Review of The Rising of the Shield Hero
This review is from the perspective of a more casual viewer, that doesnt know many of the terms used in this community. Take everything I say with a grain of salt since all of what Im going to write here is completely my own opinion. Tate no Yuusha is a good anime. There I said it please downvote me out of existence. But jokes aside I think Tate no is a good anime. It has a lot of potential that is wasted of the course of its first season, but just because it doesnt live up to its potential doesnt mean its a bad anime initself.
It just lacks the last bit of "hmpf" to make it an instant anime classic.
The darker plot twist as well as the different "hero" status is in my eyes more than enough to follow the story of our MC.
That being said I dont quite get why people dont like some of the characters.
For the majority I think that nearly all characters that got significant screen time have had their reason to exist in this anime as they were. Some of them might have been cliches, but since when are cliches bad? The Shopkeeper might be one of the biggest cliches ever, but the way he fits into the story and the way he is written still makes him sympathetic.
As for characters like Raphtalia and Filo: I can understand the disappointed in these character more or less being "Fan-Service". But, especially when it comes to Raphtalia, I think the characters are written in such a way that you can believe the way Raphtalia develops feeling for our MC. And I can see the issue with Filo. She could have been a normal girl in this world as well but had to be someone for the lolicons. But why is that bad? Why not add good characters that fit perfectly with their "Fan-Service" attribute but also make use of it in a story telling way.
That Filo is more of a child makes more than complete sense and with her the interactions with Melty become more heartwarming.
So even tho I understand the issue with Raphtalia just being a "Waifu" and Filo for "Lolicons" I still think that in how the LN and Anime were written, that it makes sense for the characters to be the way they are. Raphtalia was at the brink of death and our MC rescued her. I think thats reasonable to fall for someone after that. As it goes for Filo, im still not sure if she just wants the MCs attention or truly is in love with him. Either way it makes sense. Melty is the only one where it kinda falls flat for me. She is a nice character for exposition and has some realitic characteristics, her affinity to the MC is kind of meh.
Okay that was a shi load of text so im gonna do the TLDR here:
If you are a complete anime head and watch it basically everyday and are completely into communities and really think its your thing, then maybe you should step back from this anime.
But if you more on the casual site and want to find an anime to watch every now and then you should pick this anime up. Its fun, not too annoying and has in my eyes great characters.
