Review of Attack on Titan: Final Season - The Final Chapters
There isn't much to add to what everyone has already said. Even with all its faults, I genuinely thought the last two seasons were fine. They had action, entertainment, excitement. The issue is that iseyama created a world where, despite trying otherwise, everyone thinks in black or white. It's either genocide or suicide, nothing in between or outside. Armin thinks otherwise, but he never presents another idea. Why? Because the author wrote the story and setting in such a way that eren was forced with only two options, which wouldn't be the case if the characters weren't so narrow minded and one dimensional. Despite theheavy themes, they are never explored deeply or well, which is disappointing.
Even after all that, the alien-worm-mind-control-time-travel nonsense could have been forgiven if they just cut out the part where eren becomes a cringelord. The scene in question is the beach one. That one scene destroyed the series pretty much. If that wasn't enough , the end credits scene reinforces that idea by literally destroying everything the scout regiment fought for. Paradis is lost, the titans possibly return. All for what? The story achieves nothing.
There is creation and destruction, success and failure. This story only focuses on negatives and calls it reality. That's not reality, that's propaganda . If I wanted reality, I would watch a documentary. It's hard to look past those flaws by throwing in gorgeous visuals and animation. It feels like iseyama just gave the finger to everyone in the end, and I can't help but think it was done on purpose. Why? Hubris, perhaps. Maybe the alien worm mind controlled him into ruining it! It's not worth it to waste two and a half hours on this. Skip!
