Review of Gintama
Excellent, sublime, wonderful, for me, Gintama is a masterpiece without any doubt. I've been trying to write a review for months, and I still don't feel satisfied with this one because I feel like words aren't enough to describe how much I love Gintama and how much it has given to me. It has masterfully developed characters, many of which are female and many are secondary. The female characters are excellent; they have their own individuality and don’t depend on a man. You will love every secondary characters too and in some cases you will even cry. Forget the usual main character who wants to fight and become strong atall costs; here we have Gintoki, an unconventional protagonist who breaks the mold, a man who has lost everything and suffered, devoid of any purpose and limited himself to just surviving every single day. We see how, episode after episode, he truly comes back to living his life.
I'd also like to say a few words about the main villain. He's extremely complex and an excellent representation of misanthropy, never missing an opportunity to criticize human nature.
Comedy is brilliantly used for parodic purposes; there's intelligence behind the way it uses it to do parody at recurring anime tropes... but don't be fooled! It's not just a comedy anime; in these parts, between laughs, it builds the various characters and the interpersonal relationships between them. The serious arcs will come, which, in my opinion, are excellent, and where those same characters who, until a moment before, made us laugh now give us a thousand other emotions.
What Gintama does is questioning, through comedy, the stereotypical way in which such tropes are usually used.
In the comic arcs, it makes fun stereotypes; in the serious arcs, it destroys them.
Comedy isn't just for parody; it's also a way to criticize society. One example is how it comically illustrates our present through the eyes of a character, as if it were a dystopia (I can't be more specific, otherwise I'd end up spoiling things).
I don’t think i’ll be able to find anything else that could give me as much as this anime did.
It's simply unique.
They should invent a different number to rate it, because 10 isn't enough.
Gintama, in a world where there's a constant pursuit of perfection, reminds us that we humans are weak and imperfect, and that's fine.
