There aren´t many other anime out there that emulate Western action cinema. Black Lagoon in that case isn´t only a niche in itself but extremely good in what it does. That action looks snappy, the characters are fun and the female characters feel more interesting than most of what Disney has done with them in the last decade. Balalaika, Revy, or Roberta just ooze danger and intrigue. As anime for me at least often has a problem when it comes to female representation I think giving Black Lagoon its laurels for their representation is well deserved. But there is so much more to enjoy. BlackLagoon also has such a chill vibe. When you hear the soft melody and see the Southeast Asian sea it just feels so fucking relaxing. There also is the pirate setting which is another plus. There hardly are any media out there giving us a modern look into the pirate narratives. My biggest problem was the lack of an overarching narrative. The self-contained episodes are fun but I felt like there could have been more. While Revy and Rook evolve their characters a bit throughout the series not that much happens plot-wise after the first episode. As the manga is in perpetual hiatus I don´t think that will change anytime soon if Ever.
Despite that Black Lagoon is a great watch, which not nearly enough people have on their radar.
