Review of Gushing over Magical Girls

I will start the review with this statement: This story is not for everyone and it definitely is not for the so called "tourists". It is indeed a borderline H at some points. That said, if you are a fan of ecchi like Highschool DxD, To Love Ru, Shinmai Maou no Testament, Ishuzoku Reviewers, etc., you are going to love this one (at least I think so). And there are a few reasons for that: the ecchiness is perfect (as I said, it is sometimes borderline H), it’s got a really good story (I can't describe it much since I don't want to spoil anything forpotential new viewers), and the characters are just perfect. Another huge positive is the voice acting, mostly the female lead's voice actress – she did a phenomenal job voicing the character.

It is basically a Magical girl story from the perspective of the villains. The main girl, Utena, is a really shy girl who admires Magical girls. In fact, there is a trio of Magical girls, called Tres Magia right in her town. One day, a mascot-like character (Venalita) shows up and turns Utena into a… villainess, part of the Enormeeta group. And that’s where the fun starts – Utena finds out that she harbors some other desires towards the Tres Magia, other than simple admiration. She realizes that she loves harassing them (yeah, “that” kind of harassment).

Initially, the plot revolves around Utena, or as she is known in her evil Magical girl form – Magia Baser, and her harassing Tres Magia. Later on, new characters are introduced – namely Kiwi, Korisu, and some others. I don’t want to talk about it too much and spoil anything. But I will say it like this – each introduced character has their own quirk and is entertaining. That goes for both the Tres Magia members and members of Enormeeta.

The interesting thing about this story is that it actually shows young girls exploring their desires and their inner selves. A good number of fetishes are introduced – like sadism, masochism, exhibitionism, etc. What’s good to mention is that many people are disgusted by how the show portrays 14yo girls doing naughty stuff. But weren’t we discovering that kind of stuff at that age ourselves?

Aside form the “fighting” of Magical girls, it also introduces yuri romance – which is done so well, the couples are really good. It also introduces a simple, yet well working power system.

But to not only talk about the positives, let’s talk about some possible negatives of the anime. One is that the animation is not the most amazing you’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely not bad. If you are not a person too focused on animation, you will not mind it much. The other negative comes from whether you like ecchi anime or not, because as I said, this anime is not for everyone.

With that said, my personal opinion is that it is a phenomenal ecchi series. I will personally rate it - 11/10.
