My Heroic Husband · review
Zhui Ji is a reincarnation drama series where the main character, an established business man Yin Ning transmigrates into Ancient China as matrilocal husband of an established fabric and textiles family, Yi Ning. Plagued by the mistakes of his past life Yi Ning swears not to be too engulfed in business affairs and prefers to live a life where he influences the economic affairs of his fiance Su Tan'Er and her family's textiles business as they work diligently to create a unique fabric as a contender in the Royal Silk Supplier competition. How will Yi Ning's changed conviction affect his new life? Story & Characters: 7/10 Thestoryline of Zhui Ji isn't too hard to follow essentially MC wants to help his wife succeed in her business affairs but is met with resistance from mutually allied forces who each have their own agendas to fulfill. Yi Ning wants to lighten the burden of stress from his wife Su Tan'Er and he does it in the only way he knows how: Competitive business practices and information warfare. Apart from a few flashbacks of the past life, we are left in the dark in terms of back story so we need to infer as much as possible to fill in the blanks especially toward the end where the mysteries come to light regarding Ruoping, Yin Ning's girlfriend in the past life. The same could be said in Yi Ning's life where a lot is left out in terms of story such as the beginning when Yi Ning stumbles upon his master, the attempt on his and Su Tan'Er's life, the results of the Emperor's royal silk supplier etc. It felt like the depth in each arc was just enough to pass by but not enough to be engulfed and wrapped up in the fictional worldly affairs.
There are a lot of characters in this short series on Yi Ning and the opposing side so this series tries its best to retain as much information about each character as possible in a short amount of time. This means that it sacrifices character depth and lore that would have made the characters more human and emotionally motivated. An example would be the opposing characters, who have a history/childhood with Su Tan'Er but we don't see any of this past development so we aren't as immersed in the conflict right up until the end when it's already been resolved. If they kept the scope of characters smaller it would have led to more emotional and meaningful character development on the characters that mattered to the story more.
Art & Sound: 7/10
Art and animation were very high quality and the movements were elegant; The budget even allowed for hair and fabric physics which was a pleasant experience to see. The colors were fairly vibrant and muted as needed to help with storytelling aspects i.e In the rainy night forest scene after Yi Ning gets into a scuffle with bandits. I do wish the camera angles were a bit more cinematically influenced, a lot of the shots were composed well but the movement still lacked motion and composition.
The music is playful yet serious, whenever there is comedy the pace of music picks up to create a playful and mischievous atmosphere. The same can be said for the dialogue scenes, the background music is ambient and fits in with the mood. Voice acting and quality is good enough along with sound effects.
Overall & Enjoyment: 7/10
This series was not as I expected, I came in prepared for a typical zero to hero reincarnation where the main character wins it all with the power of modern medicine, economics, science, politics etc. However, this series is more toned down and mellow rather focusing on the drama elements and political challenges Yi Ning encounters than action and tech progression. It's a deserving change of pace for a reincarnation series and the ending leaves a massive cliffhanger and more questions for next time.
