Review of Devilman: Crybaby
Devilman crybaby is one of the better animes to have come out in recent times. Its writing is slick and its handling of various themes is very mature. It is refreshing to see an anime polarizing opinions in the way Devilman has and for good measure, it deserves it so. Art: The art has been again very much hit or miss and for me, it was a home run. The art never distracted as compared to Kill la Kill and it was used very well by the art directors. Although it was either too dark or 'afternoonish' at most times, it was well done. Sound: The sound was verymediocre especially the OP and ED and the other soundtracks were very generic and not memorable. However, what did elevate the soundtrack were the awesome raps and the poetry to Miko which brings back the question "Is Japanese the best language for rap?"
Characters:
The characters were very bland and one dimensional. Maybe it was due to the pacing of the story or the short runtime, but either way, none of the characters stood out. Akira was your shouting self righteous one tail naruto, Ryo was your typical yandere regarding Akira initially and then we forgot about him. Miki was as bland as possible. The most fleshed character was Miko and that too in the 9th episode ending.
Story:
The greatest part about the anime. The story was very fast paced, leaving very little room for breathing. Very AoT regarding deaths of characters and the story was coherent throughout. The ending was a very generic one which literally destroyed the essence it achieved in episode 9, otherwise it was very tight and I never felt bored in the runtime.
