Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
I watched this bc I wanted something horror, I wouldn't consider this horror though. But this review is for what it is, not as a horror anime stuff i didnt like: -lots of nonsensical logic. for example the girl suspecting a dude of being a man-eating creature and she’s just like oh i’ll confront him before confronting anyone else and ask him if he is a man-eating creature! like wtf……does she want to get killed? -the mc’s girlfriend not having any reaction to him jumping down from a very high floor while carrying her and being fine, and then jumping over a really tall fence. also not seemingto remember or care about seeing a parasite slaughter everyone
-MANY characters seeming to not care about the parasites, especially MC’s classmates
-MC’s classmates acting in a ridiculous way when there were killer threats (laughing, chatting and not taking it seriously when the adults were OBVIOUSLY taking it seriously. wtf how is it realistic that none of them are scared!)
-that one girl classmate who LAUGHED and joked around while asking shinichi about when he was the first witness to come across his friend’s dead body. um???? not a laughing matter??? some characters’ attitudes in this anime make 0 sense and are not realistic
-treatment of women as only objects of MC’s affection. the MC had like what, 5 girls have a crush on him, most for no apparent reason and upon first seeing him (?????) these girls having no identity or merits for themselves and existing only to add to MC’s harem
-portrayal of the girl who could sense parasites - she was creepily obsessed with MC, tried to steal him from his gf, fucking kept a strand of his hair and wrapped his hair around her ring finger, was overall delusional and obsessed with a boy for no reason and i feel that the portrayal of her felt icky and sexist
-women in the anime in general seeming to be portrayed in a sexist male-gaze kind of way. sometimes portraye as being dumb as shit, like unbelievably dumb
-japanese government covering up the parasites and not giving correct news coverage and for what reason??
-not much talk about parasites throughout the rest of the world. it WAS happening throughout the world, and yet we se SOOOOO many cases around the vincity where shinichi lives and don’t get any info abt how it’s affecting other countries. if there were THAT many just in the area where shinichi lives there has got to be so many people who died in other areas, but it was totally downplayed
-characters not seeming to care much considering the amount of deaths that happened in their area in the short amount of time??? not seeming to take any precautions to stay inside or whatever
-wtf there are so many thugs in shinichi’s town who just wanna beat people up lol does he just live in the worst area in japan or??
-anime logic, so much anime logic…….so many battles being arbitrarily won when they should have been lost because the author can just issue deus ex machinas whenever he wants! migi coming back to life. the end scene when migi saved the mc’s girlfriend….uhh we didn’t even see how it happened and migi’s supposed to be asleep
-i am not 100% on what author’s philosophy was. but there was a lot when i was watching the show that i didn’t agree with
-”people don’t actually care about the environment they just care about the
environment to feel better about themselves” or something along those lines -
i don’t think that’s true. caring abt environment is usually bc people care about
animals, nature etc and feel a connection to those things
-when shinichi debated so long over whether to kill the parasite in the
end……..what????? that is not something worthy of debating that long over like???
it’s so obvious you should kill him. he fucking killed so many people and will
continue to kill more if you don’t kill him????? like wtf he is not on the “same level”
as normal humans
-all the talk about parasites being the same as humans…………….ehhhhhhh nah i
don’t really agree.
stuff i did like:
-migi slowly learning more humanity and growing to care about shinichi
-the scene where the parasite woman who had a baby died while protecting her baby. she had unwittingly developed feelings of maternal love towards her baby even though she was a parasite. the scene where she witnessed how the woman whose body she possessed’s mother could instantly recognize that she wasn’t really the mother’s daughter. ehhh motherhood and motherly love is such a prevalent trope in anime but this was still one of my favorite parts ig.
-the old detective dude was smart, we didn’t get to see that much of him tho!
-if that one tumblr analysis i read is correct…….and the show is about how what makes u human isn’t necessarily if ur a human and a parasite. it’s your values. for example migi developed the ability to care for another but that criminal at the end was so deranged that he could not be considered “human” at all. that’s a message i’d agree with ig!
