The World YAMIZUKAN · review
I was really in the mood for some non-sequitur, anthology horror anime like I had enjoyed in "Pet Shop of Horrors" but in this bizarre presentation, I watched 13 episodes of what can't even be called anime. This is a collection of stories, each about 4 minutes long, that are just storyboard drawings of various style and quality. The tales range from supernatural to science fiction, touching on many classic works and themes from noted authors in each genre. Each short is supplemented with a narrator and some voice acting for the characters- and I would love to mention some names, but I can't finda single credit for this series!
The tales themselves are predictable, even hokie. Many times I was left throwing my hands up and exclaiming, "That's it?!" in both surprise and disgust. Despite the attempts made, this show doesn't come near the quality of the inspirational material it's clearly based on (Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Tales from the Crypt, etc.) No, I think this would have made a terrific picture book series for young adults or maybe even children who could handle such gruesome curdlers and imagery. Each felt like a wicked bedtime story designed to give kids nightmares and not an anime or even something made for TV.
This was a badly executed concept and I'm giving it a charitable 3 because it had the good sense to be a short form presentation with competent voice acting, and a couple of the tales did show some imagination and earned a smile. But, on the whole, this is one to skip. I've dropped better titles than this one. Break it out on Halloween if you've watched everything else on your list. 3/10. Go check out something else.
