Review of Devilman: Crybaby
When I got the Netflix notification telling me of Devilman Crybaby I initially thought "Ugh." Since... y'know... Death Note. I paid no attention to it at all until out of nowhere it just... blew up. Every anime youtuber was talking about it and twitter was blowing up about it. Curiosity hit me so I decided to watch it out of boredom one day. Now, Devilman Crybaby is based off Devilman, a manga from 1972. So why has there been an adaptation 46 years later? Well actually it's been adapted many times before. The first adaptation actually came one month after it started publishing. After that it's gottenmultiple OVA's, including movies, crossovers and even a live action movie! Devilman Crybaby is another adaptation of the manga however it's been modernised. It still sticks to the manga in the meantime and does quite a great job of that!
I raised a brow at the art as it looked a bit sketchy and rough around the edges but I eventually brushed it aside as the fact that it's just a new art style. I then concluded after the first episode that the art can be silly when it wants to, and be beautiful when it wants to.
Now the sound... OH MY GOOOD the sound. If you haven't heard it, please listen to Devilman No Uta and come back... did you dance to it? RHETORICAL QUESTION. Yes you did. All of the soundtracks in Devilman are brilliant. I guess it was because it reminded me of late 70s/Early 80s synth.
Akira was a great character. He starts off as an absolute crybaby with no talents and didn't have the body of a JoJo. To then being an absolute badass! (Still a crybaby doe.) However the only other characters I liked were Ryo, Miki and Miko. I had a super tough time trying to like the other characters.
Devilman is a great anime and there's a reason some are saying it's one of the best anime of the year so far. But let me warn you... great art, great soundtrack and characters will not prepare you for how dark it can be.
