Tsuki Ga Kirei is by no means a revolutionary romance anime. It does not bring anything new to the table, and nor does it try to. It is this that results in it being the best romance anime series I have ever seen. In a time where genres seem to be adding more and more elements to their series in hope of bringing something new and exciting, Studio Feel does the opposite, and produces a simple, powerful and beautiful anime as a result. Tsuki ga Kirei has found a perfect balance that both strips back all unnecessary convoluting plot elements and characters, and yet leaves in manyof the quiet and niche moments that make this anime so powerful.

Whether it be the awkward silence as the boy musters up the courage to tell the girl how he feels, or the joyful, imaginary boxing of Kotarou as he recieves a message from Akane late at night, it is these little moments that are so relatable and allow us to develop an intimate relationship with these characters.

The overall success of Tsuki ga Kirei is its powerful representation of a teenage romance through quiet realism, not drama and excitement.

My interpretation of the meaning of series:

Love does not need to be understood. Neither characters seem to have any idea what to do with their emotions towards each other, and each step of the way seems awkward and fragile.
There are moments of sheer confusion, misunderstanding and hopelessness. However there is something underlying this, a momentum that drives them both on to overcome all of these imperfections.
Something pure, incomprehensible and completely beyond their control. And only in the last scene of the last episode do they realise what it is.
