Review of A Lull in the Sea
Warning possible Spoilers What I thought was going to be another Your Lie in April after getting past episode 3 this anime suddenly turned into a very interesting and conflicting show. The story focuses on a group of friends who live underwater, but go to school on land, what they don't realise is that the ocean is changing and this will affect everything around it making the group of friends lives changed forever. For the first two episodes I was actually thinking about dropping this, but suddenly the story kicked in and everything got very interesting, I enjoyed the mythos that the show gave me of the historybetween the sea and land humans who have their differences and this show really pulls out the racial and discrimination card, but it worked really well here it kept me interested and I wanted to see the group of friends succeed in making both their races equal by doing things that were very perilous and the stakes were very high in this show sure the pacing was a little slow, but there are points where the show escalates very quickly like at the halfway point where the situation goes south really quickly and it is also the same when the anime reaches it's climax.
Another really interesting part of the story is seeing the changes in the relationships between the characters because there is a timeskip at some point which affects pretty much everyone and a lot of things change between them plus a lot of things happen between them because of personal situations too so seeing them resolve these problems was really enjoyable to watch.
Now the characters were kinda mixed, but mostly good since some start off annoying, but do redeem themselves over time.
Hikari is the main male of the group and he does start off annoying as he constantly complains at everything, but overtime he becomes more mature and starts thinking with his brain instead of his mouth so by the end he did become more likable.
Manaka is the main female of the group and is a very sweet and shy girl who is very close to Hikari, but she ends up in a bunch of incidents between multiple characters and other life threatening situations and she does become more troubled because of the events unfolding around her since she is at the centre of it.
Kaname is the other male character and is Hikari's best friend he is surprisingly modest and is more kind compared to Hikari and he too also gets caught in some situations that end up breaking his heart.
Chisaki is the other female character of the group and is Manaka's best friend and is also the girl that Kaname has a crush on, there are some moments in the show where she is caught in a difficult situation having to chose certain people and is the only one out of the sea friends that ages making it difficult for her to fit in again.
Tsumugu is the land friend of the group and he is grows up to be an oceanography researcher so he can help a professor understand the changes that happen within the ocean so he can understand himself.
Miuna is the adopted land daughter of Hikari's sister who got married to Miuna's father and forms a crush on Hikari after the timeskip since they are now the same age and she does develop an Ena which allows her to breath underwater.
I dd enjoy some of the other characters too like Hikari's sister who ended up being banished to the land since she was having a relationship with a land human, and there was also Sayu who is Miuna's best friend who was kinda of annoying and I ain't sure if she deserves her good ending.
Now I really liked the artstyle the way the ocean town was made looked amazing and you can see the difference between the land and sea people which is just changing the colour of the eyes and eyebrows, I liked how detailed the landscape was after the timeskip as you can see the damage that has been done to the land and sea because of the failed ceremony.
I really did find the mythos of the sea and and land people interesting like how their Ena's worked, the fact that they have to make a sacrifice to make the ocean happy so they can live in peace which added a bit of a dark tone to the show and the continuous battle between sea and land humans was also very tense at times since it could make the relationship between the two races worse or better so the characters had to tread carefully.
Now the Romance aspect is a huge part in developing the characters because I can't even call it a love triangle since there is so many angles, but unlike Your Lie in April the whole love shape situation does solve itself with everyone getting a happy ending of sorts, true there were some bumpy rides and I felt that Miuna, Chisaki, Kaname and Tsumugu were only created for this part of the show which did sort of affect my view on their characters it did resolve itself well and it didn't annoy me which made my view on Love triangles change because it made me realise is that if you use it right you can make a good story out of it.
Overall I thought this was actually a pretty good anime there were a few missteps, but I mostly enjoyed it so if you're someone looking for a good Love triangle for once then you might enjoy this anime.
