Soloist in a Cage · review
Simple but very well made. Soloist doesn't seem to aim to be a grand and complex series but that's quite alright. The plot progresses fast but naturally, without feeling rushed. The characters, bad and good, are quick to become likeable. The art is gorgeous and detailed, the character design stylish, the page composition dynamic and there are lots of creative visual ideas. On a more personal touch I felt and really appreciated a sense of mesure in the writing of the characters (apart from the basic thugs who are a bit caricatural): a character that is being manipulated is not necessarily dumb, a character will realise he'shaving a bad idea if someone points it out... also, author knows when to step down characters. That touch of finesse adds in credibility and flow, and I would like to see more of that in other artists.
There are still weaknesses but it's quite good for what it is. I'm waiting to see how the author deals with the conclusion and I hope to see more of his work in the future.
