I didn't expect much when I first picked up this story, but its dedication to fantasy elements and aesthetics charmed me rather quickly. The author chose a style and world to stick with, and they lean into it excellently. What captivated me enough to write a review is how well this story uses 'magic sicknesses' as a digestible. nuanced approach to mental illness. While it is technically 'all in our heads', mental illnesses are entirely capable of inflicting all types of harm on ourselves and our loved ones. Truly looking at yourself and choosing to love that person is difficult, but it's the most fundamental thingwe must do. That's what this story is about.
