Sousou no Frieren is discovering multiple aspects to give the audience a proper enjoyment. And meanwhile it heavily depends whether you click or not with the main characters, you should give it a chance regardless. The story is about an elf mage, who is alive for a while already. But instead of discovering new things, anime starts with the end of the journey. That's the time, when we get an explanation, that the human's life is for elf basically nothing, too short to even notice properly and that's also the time, when the main character Frieren starts to reflecting on her past and trying to makenew bonds with humans.

Anime is full of retrospective scenes, which are trying to connect Frieren's new adventure with Fern and Stark with that past adventure with the hero Himmel. So character development for Frieren and space for it here is huge and it's really enjoyable.

While traveling, the main group is bumping into multiple situations, interesting people, enemies and slowly discovering the world around them for the watcher. I must admit that the pace of the anime could be an issue for some people, because sometimes it feels slow, but I personally enjoyed it, because it had a really interesting writing and dialogues.

Jokes are something that will catch you off guard and make your day better. It's not directly a commedy, but when there is some funny situation, anime tries to mine everything out of it. The story is able to have a lighter mood as well as provide some tension in fights. It can be quite dynamic and have a wide range of emotions.

For a conclusion: whether you are a target audience or not, give it a chance and make your own opinion. As much as I know, for many people it has been a pleasant surprise, including me. Even though it's marked as shounen, I would say it has many seinen aspects and POVs you can discover. So the reason why it's so popular, might be that it offers a good story, characters and world for wider audience.
