Review of Horimiya
I do still very much enjoy this series and think the acclaim it has garnered since release is/was warranted. It avoids a lot of pitfalls of a lot of other romance anime, but I almost feel like it counters too hard. The two leads are great and likable for sure, and we see major developments for the supporting cast, but perhaps I am a little dissatisfied with the series being this short and ending in a sort of anticlimactic way for me. I did enjoy a lot of this dialogue being surprisingly funny at times because it really upon characters’ anxieties, quirks, perceptions and justa lot of stuff that worked well. I can say the same of when they convey their feelings to one another. But no speech or piece of dialogue really went that extra level that felt monumentally moving like other romantic works.
Very solid show, nothing objectionable or really all that bad about it, but in terms of the stuff I mentioned plus just fine character design, music, artwork, and other matters of production, this series doesn’t go beyond just “good” for me.
The one thing I think it does exceptionally well though is displaying the psychology of its characters and the layers they have with their personas and insecurities and stuff like that. It’s what the show does best. Light recommendation for romance enjoyers.
