Review of The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of the Commandments
Seven Deadly sins is a fun, enjoyable ride if you going in without expecting too much. ***Few spoilers below*** The story is nothing original, the themes fairly standard and cliched. The characters ...thats a tough one to rate. I think by and large the sins are very unique with not simply distinctive powers but also personalities and what is done very well is rather than giving us exposition dumps on my they are named a certain sin their personalities and actions show us this. Each character has well fleshed out backstories and this season does a good job of developing our main cast further. Even thevillains have fairly decent backstories.
Escanor is absolutely fantastic addition to the cast. What a badass introduction and really keen to see more of him.
The problem with this series (if you're prepared to wave over the plot conveniences and ass-pulls) remains the main duo. Meliodias and Elizabeth and especially their relationship. Meliodas himself isnt awfully memorable. This season he remains a cliched bland shounen protagonist and knock-off Goku...with convenient powerups with the writers nudging us every time "hey look hes only at 1% of his true power!" so that we come to expect another ass-pull. Not to mention the fact that he cant actually die. What a way to ruin the tension in the show.
Elizabeth is far worse. Exists simply to scream "Sir Meliodas !" and cry over or for him in every scene. Your standard damsel in distress. An annoying character who will also happen to tap into unexplained power when its convenient. Otherwise is useless for 99% of the time.
Their relationship seems so forced and experiences zero development from the moment they met. The groping gag doesnt get any less cringe. But this season goes further to tell us the Captain actually saved her as a baby and played with her as a child. Weird and uncomfortable. Like just...no. I know shes the "reincarnation" of Liz but honestly. Funny enough the relationship with original Liz seems far more balanced but oh well. Some of the other relationships in the show are far more interesting. MerlinX Escanor. Ban X Elaine / Jerico. Even Guila X Gowther (haha!)... Some of the most heartwarming moments we get from this.
Look. Is it as bad as some make it out to be. No, its fairly decent and what you'd expect. The world building and character development in the first half was great. the second half felt rushed but was...meh i guess. But this is no masterpiece.
