Review of Devilman: Crybaby
Honestly, I checked this out because I knew Uchiyama Kouki and Murase Ayumu play the main characters. But the story, interesting art style, and the overarching theme of the whole series really captivated me. I'm so glad that Netflix streamed this because otherwise, we wouldn't have gotten the glorious gore, violence and sex that are there to tell the story and add to the characterisation, not sheerly for the shock factor. I joking tell people I watched this for the boobies but in all seriousness, this anime makes you question what it really means to be 'human'. I read somewhere that Ucchi said arecent role he took really challenged his voice work and I wonder if that role was Akira. Akira shows a lot of raw emotions and is the titular crybaby. Watching the series, however, may turn you into a crybaby as well.
Ayu was perfect as always. His range never ceases to amaze me. Fans of sports anime can agree when I say that Ayu's voice as Ryou is totally different from Hinata.
I highly recommend that you check this out if you have a Netlix subscription AND can handle all the gore and sex. There's more than enough of those to go around, trust me. (Kinda like Game of Thrones but better and with interesting philosophy)
