Tsuki ga Kirei follows two middle schoolers slowly but surely grow closer to another. Although you might see this one of those cheap, predictable romance anime it actually does quite a bit to set itself apart from what people might expect would be similar anime. Tsuki ga Kirei has a really unique way of telling a romance story. Instead of following one character and the drama/romance surrounding them, it follows two characters, illustrating their growth and feelings towards one another as time goes on. This not only is a smart way of showing off your characters' emotions, but makes it easier forr the viewer to getinvested in their situation.

It's not an anime that wastes 12 episodes on making the characters grow closer together only to have them do a little kiss on the last episode or so. The male main character isn't incredibly easily flustered but can actually buckle down when he needs to. The main characters feel very real and down to earth, especially compared to most other anime.

Though their shyness still got on my nerves at times, they made sure to show that they're not shy, one dimensional characters and that "being shy" isn't their whole character as you often see. Their shyness only really comes out when faced with the person they like, and when they're talking with their friends and/or family they tend to be more expressive and open. For a show that is as short as this one it did really well establishing characters and their not one dimensional character traits.

With all that being good and well, Tsuki ga Kirei is still very slow at times. The wonderful style does pretty well and somewhat makes up for it, but the slow pacing of the anime makes it feel rather off-putting in terms of general pacing. Once more drama starts to ensue the anime is over and you are shown with the conclusion through text messages (which is a nice nod to the fact that these characters have been texting each other through the entire anime).

All and all, Tsuki ga Kirei is nothing too new or special. Though it does some things that sets it apart from other anime it's not special enough to recommend to every anime fan, though if you're into adorable, middle school romance, this might be right up your alley.
